LCpl Birchley selected for British Army Ice Hockey Team

Meet LCpl Birchley from Doncaster. Yorkshire Platoon, D (Rifles) Coy, 5RRF soon to be Y Company 8 RIFLES.

Last month LCpl Birchley played for the Infantry Ice Hockey Team in the British Army Whittaker Cup which they ultimately won in their inaugural year. This month he once again played for the Infantry Ice Hockey Team in the Tri-Services Championships held at Ice Sheffield. It was a very hard fought 4 days of Hockey with some new players in the team and unfortunately they placed 6th overall, however the standard of Hockey was much higher across the 3 services so they were very pleased with the effort all the lads put in!

Ultimately his own efforts were recognised across the 2 tournaments and he was rewarded by being selected to play for the British Army’s main Ice Hockey Team, The British Army Blades in the Tri-Services final!

The Tri-Services final is the biggest annual UK Armed Forces Ice Hockey event and the Army team were looking to take a record breaking 5th year running title win facing off against the RAF Aces. After an incredible 60 minutes of Hockey the game went in to sudden death overtime which the Army won, ending the game 5-4.

Being the only Rifles Regiment Reservist player this year we know going forward the Battalion will get behind LCpl Birchley as he represents the Rifles, the Infantry and Army Blades team.
